Collectors with interest in history and beauty have long been attracted by the power of Indian pottery. The origin of Indian pottery can be traced back to Neolithic age, even before the invention of potter’s wheel. Discovery of potter’s wheel led to realization of full potential of Indian pottery. The first ancient Indian pots were found in Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa civilizations in Indus valley. Pottery has a very significant role in India’s religions. •    Glazed variety
This kind of pottery is a blend of Indian and Arabian pottery techniques. It a rare form of Indian pottery and its main aspects include a white background with blue and green patterns decorated on the pot after numerous rounds of baking in the kiln. This form of pottery is practiced in Rampur, Delhi, Chunar, Amritsar and several other parts in southern India.

•    Unglazed variety
The unglazed varieties are often the finest version. This category is characterized by very fine paper thin pottery known as kagzi. They are mainly produced in the northern parts of India including Alwar, Kutch and Kanpur.

Based on its features, Indian pottery can be categorized into:

•    Black pottery
This is an unglazed form of pottery deeply influenced by the Harrapan culture. Each part of India has a different form of black pottery. Nizmabad is famous for its black pottery with silver decorations. This type of pottery has a lot of shine which is derived from the clay found in the rice fields. In Kanpur, very thin pottery is made with incise patterns. In Merrut region, potters specialize in making slim necked water containers with a variety of patterns and designs.

•    Blue pottery
This is a glazed Indian pottery and is made of multani mitti (fuller earth). Blue pottery was first discovered by Mongol artisans’ and mixes Chinese glazing techniques with Persian ornamental arts. Delhi, Jaipur and Khurja are famous for producing fine jars, plates, vases, pots and many other things. Each place has its own unique aspect which differentiates blue pottery of one place from another. Jaipur blue pottery is semi-transparent and more hygienic to use. It is generally decorated with plants and birds motifs.

•    Terracotta
This form of unglazed pottery is found in whole of India in different forms. Most importantly it is found in rural areas and is especially displayed in the form of animal figures and deities in sacred places. Each region has it own unique form of terracotta pottery. Terracotta pottery is the underprivileged man’s way of articulating himself artistically.

Southern parts of India have other different pottery style apart from the one mentioned above. This region is famous for its clay pottery in large sizes. Potters in this region mainly make storage jars and figurines which are decorated in complex patterns.  They also make clay pipes used for smoking. The clay pipes are very popular for either collection or use. Vellore, Arcot, and Karigari are the most famous regions where clay pipes are made.
